The day is cold, and dark, and dreary;

It rains, and wind is never weary;

The vine still clings to the moldering wall,

화살과 노래

나는 공중을 향해 화살을 쏘았으나,

화살은 땅에 떨어져 간 곳이 없었다.

재빨리도 날아가는 화살의 그 자취,

누가 그 빠름을 뒤따를 수 있으랴.

나는 공중울 향해 노래를 불렀으나,

노래는 땅에 떨어져 간 곳이 없었다.

그 누가 날카롭고 강한 눈이 있어

날아가는 그 노래를 따를 것이랴.

세월이 흐른 뒤 그 참나무 밑둥에

그 화살은 성한 채 꽂혀 있었고.

그 노래는 처음에서 끝 구절까지

친구의 가슴에 숨어 있었다.
